VOCABULARY REVIEW: LINE

line the path of a moving point, a mark made on a surface
measure the length & width
type straight, curved, zigzag, etc.
direction movement across the picture plane
location placement on the picture plane
character given by the medium used to make the line

Some Line Types:
Aggressive Line An emphatically stated line.
Blurred Line A deliberately smudged, erased, or destroyed line.
Calligraphic Line A free-flowing line that resembles handwriting, is uneven in its thickness, and also can be called organic, or fluid.
Contour Line A line responding to outline or surface information & that delineates both the outside edge of an object and the edges of planes, tones, shapes, or textures, as opposed to outline, which delineates only the outside edge of an object.
Cross-Contour Line A line that describes an objects horizontal or cross-contours rather than its vertical contours, emphasizing the volumetric aspects of an object.
Blind Contour Line A contour line exercise in which the artist never looks at the paper.
Continuous Line An unbroken line that is constantly moving.
Implied Line A line that stops and starts again; the viewer’s eye completes the suggested line.
Mechanical Line An objective line that maintains an even thickness throughout its length.
Organizational Line A line that provides the structure & basic organization for a drawing, an interior or exterior line that cannot be seen.
Structural Line A line that responds to the surface planes of an object.
Hatched Line Lines that are drawn parallel in a series to generate tone, respond to shadow, and possibly interpret surface texture.
Cross-hatched Line Layers of hatched lines drawn in different directions to create degrees of tone.
Modeled Line A line that responds to the surface characteristics of an object & suggests 3-D qualities.
