PROBLEM: Using a dot as your only shape, explore the principles of organization
(See vocabulary list) by repeating, changing size, order etc. Dot (or circle) must be solid black, on a white picture plane.

MATERIALS: Sketch book, pencils, makers (sharpies etc) white paper or card stock, black acrylic paint, brushes

FINAL PRESENTATION: Three (3) 8” x 8” finished solutions

ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE: 3-4 hours

STEP ONE (EVALUATE PROBLEM)

Review, define and evaluate: What are the principles of organization?

b) How will I execute this problem in a way that’s efficient? For example: time management for materials: Acrylic paint is potentially messy and needs some time to dry, brushes need to be washed etc.

STEP TWO (INVESTIGATE SOLUTIONS)

Using pencil and ruler, section off squares in your sketchbook

Using pencils and/or markers for getting ideas quickly down on paper, explore as many of these principles as possible. (i.e. repetition, proportion, variety etc) in your sketchbook.

Research online or in Library: Kandinsky,

STEP THREE (EXECUTE SOLUTIONS)

a) Pick three of your favorites and remake them using 8” x 8” squares and black acrylic paint. You may draw the dots or circles first and fill in, but presentation must be neat for in-class critique on Wednesday September 8.

CONSIDERATIONS:

Part of this assignment is to explore your work process as well as the outcome.

Plan your time wisely.

Plan your materials and process. Leave time for clean-up, fixing mistakes using white paint, neatly trimming edges of paper etc.
